Who am I? My name is Jonathan Edwards and I’m the Nutrition Project Editor here at Hamilton/Wolcott Publishing.
Five years ago I was 40 pounds overweight and starting to be in poor health because of it. Because I’m “in the business”, I knew that most “popular diets” only work for a short time and then you gain the weight back. So I thought, “Ok, since I am in this business, I can get all of the available worthwhile diets, and as soon as one stops working I’ll jump to the next one. That way I won’t stop losing.”
Well, I know now that it wouldn’t really have worked that way. But thinking along those lines “primed me” for the day my boss asked me to take a look at a diet book manuscript he’d gotten from a nutrition researcher. The manuscript was written at way too high a level for ordinary people, but as I worked with the author to try to get it into better shape, I saw that his diet ideas actually combined all those other diets I’d been intending to try… and added some new stuff… and also explained why these things must be done to make losing weight successful. In other words, it's the basic strategy that I’m going to tell you about below. Naturally I was skeptical … but intrigued … so I decided to try it myself and see.
Well, it was an awfully easy process, and the weight came off… about 10 pounds a month (much faster in the beginning; a little slower at the end)… and 5 months later I was 40 pounds lighter and feeling a whole lot better about everything in my life… (and that 40 lbs off also put me at almost my “ideal” healthiest weight.) As they say: “It made a believer out of me!”
Since then, I’ve been working with Dr. A. (as we call him) to keep his book up to date. (The current version is: The 2004 Multi-Diet: Taming The Food Beast!).
So then why have I written my own guide?Well, it wasn’t my idea. Here’s what happened. By now you can explain the basic strategy almost as well as I can anyway.”
And after a few days I thought, “Well, why not? Why not leave out most of the theory and pack in all these great practical ideas that I’ve gotten from customers or other professionals who have written or emailed us or that I've discovered for myself? There’s a huge need for something like this. And I do know this stuff pretty well. And besides, I’ve always wanted to ‘do my own project’.”
So I did it. But I can’t say I did it alone. Dr. A. looked it over and made some suggestions. Other nutritionists checked my numbers. I really just wrote up the incredibly powerful methods and ideas that they and so many other people contributed.

The reason I think they succeeded is that they were smart enough (or lucky enough) to discover on their own the little-known strategy we share with you in this letter and our guide… But in most cases, people working on their own can only discover what works for them, not why it works.
I will explain why it works… and once you understand why, you’ll be able to do it better than anyone else… a lot better!
Everything we say in this guide is based on standard, replicated science that has been verified time and time again. (We’ve just given it a “new twist” that makes it about 50 times more effective than the usual mainstream diet pabulum.)
Every idea in this guide is consistent with the main nutrition publications of the National Academy of Sciences (particularly the DRIs available at the National Academy bookstore website), and in reports published in major peer-reviewed medical journals.
Here is The “Secret” of the Simple but Little-Known Strategy for Effective Weight Loss:Your body needs almost 50 different nutrients from food. It must get them directly from food because it can’t make them from anything else, and they are vital to your life and health.
Whenever your body starts to run low on even one of these vital nutrients, it triggers hunger (or some other very “motivational” sensation) to make you eat to get it more of whatever it’s running low on. It does this because it has no other way to both signal and stimulate you to get what it must have to keep you alive and healthy.
This means that hunger is not an “enemy” you should fight… not even when you’re trying to lose weight. The feeling of hunger is really just alerting you to a genuine nutritional need. It is a signal that your body wants more of something very important that it can only get from food. This means that… paradoxically… in order to lose weight, you need to give in to hunger…not fight it… but this works only if you know how to “give in” in the right way!
What does your body really need when it makes you hungry? More Calories? No! no, no, no! Calories (meaning food energy) certainly are one of the vital nutrients that you can only get from food… But when you are overweight, your body can’t run low on Calories! And if it does runs low on Calories, you can’t be overweight. Because by definition, when you’re overweight, you’ve got plenty of Calories stored in your fat cells. (And unfortunately, you can see all of your excess Calories in a mirror anytime you want… (other people don’t even need the mirror). So your body isn’t low on Calories… and so it’s not making you hungry to get more Calories.
When you’re overweight… and on a diet… and getting hungry… you don’t need to eat food with more Calories. Instead, when this happens, your body always wants you to eat food that will give it more of one of the other nutrients… that is, whichever one it’s really starting to run out of.
That is the secret of successful weight loss! Everyone… without exception… who has successfully lost weight and kept it off, has learned how to solve this problem… by eating the right stuff… even if they themselves don’t realize it!
But how do you solve it? What diet do you use? What do you eat?
Here's how: Most people intuitively understand that if they could just eat the right things in the right amounts they’d lose weight… and this is absolutely right. But you can't lose weight if your diet makes you constantly fight hunger… because you can’t stay on that kind of diet long enough... and you can’t go back on it often enough. You’ve probably tried often enough to know how sadly true this is.
But as you’ve seen, the reason for "hunger" is not the big mystery you may have assumed it is. Hunger, cravings, aches, pains, and low energy levels are all signs that your diet isn't giving you enough of everything you need, and your body wants you to eat to get more of whatever it’s starting to run out of.
If these sensations happen nearly continuously, that means whatever diet technique you’re using is telling you to eat the wrong foods in the wrong amounts… and so you’re not getting all of the nutritional things your body needs in order to keep you healthy. Many popular diets make this mistake because their designers are usually doctors who have for some reason gotten fixated on managing just one or two nutrients… usually the ones they happen to have studied… protein, carbohydrate, fat… whatever.
Managing these things is not wrong… in fact it’s required… it's just not nearly enough.Such diets typically leave your intake of 20 or 30 critical nutrients completely to chance. And chances are… when you're not eating much food… you won't get enough of a lot of them. Your body won't be happy about that. Of course it will trigger hunger, cravings, aches, pains, and low energy… or other unpleasant symptoms… as it tries to cope with the shortages of vital nutrients your inadequate diet is creating.
This means that most of these inadequate methods must simply tell you that you must be “willing” to constantly fight some level of hunger, craving, aches, pains, or low energy to make it work. They call this “motivation”, and “the will to succeed”, and lots of other things… ...But it's really just demanding that you make up for their nutritionally inadequate diet technique. That’s not good enough!
How much of which nutrients do you really need?
Here’s the principle: To lose weight without hunger, you must get normal amounts of every human nutrient—except Calories. You must not get "normal" amounts of Calories… because that’s what made you fat in the first place. This principle is simple to explain, and the techniques are simple to do ... ... but the methods are not so simple to figure out on your own. That’s why I’ve written the Simple Effective Weight Loss Practical Guide.
There are about 50 nutrients that your body could need more of when it makes you hungry. That's a lot to keep track of. Unless you’re a trained nutritionist… or have a lot of study time on your hands… you won’t have the know-how to put together a high-nutrition, and low-Calorie set of foods on your own. And even most nutritionists wouldn’t find it that easy, because there are certain traps (mainly with carbohydrate, certain minerals, and fiber) that have badly confused most mainstream nutritionists. (These problems are so easy to solve that a lot of people are going to kick themselves when they see how to do it! More on that below.)
The method you need is any one that reliably (meaning every day) gives your body enough of every single individual nutrient that it requires… and which just as reliably doesn’t give it enough Calories to maintain its current weight.
When you can really do this, your body simply pulls it's daily Calorie needs out of your fat cells (which is why they exist anyway), but it won’t run low on anything else that it can only get by making you hungry and forcing you to eat.

Why Can’t You Just Take a Vitamin Pill?Sure, it would be great if you could just take some sort of "multivitamin supplement" to guarantee adequate nutrition. But you already know that if it were really that simple, every vitamin company on the planet would already be selling the supplement and nobody would be fat anymore. The problem with this idea is that even the best "multi's" can reliably give you only about one-half of the total number of nutrients you need. (There are good practical and safety reasons for this, by the way.) Multivitamin supplements are a good idea… probably even necessary… they’re just not sufficient.
Vitamin and mineral supplements do make weight loss a lot simpler, though… and as dieters we like simple. The “Forgotten” Minerals You Must Manage Separately
Here's the main reason multivitamin supplements can take you about half-way to your goal… but then need additional help. Many people (even nutritionists) talk about “vitamins & minerals” as if these substances all belong to just one single category of nutrients. This misses a critically important practical distinction that’s probably destroyed more diets… and caused more undeserved failures… than any other single factor!
There are 13 vitamins and 8 “trace minerals”. These are all substances needed in such small quantities that multivitamin supplement manufacturers can easily pack all you need for a whole day into one pill. (The high-quality brands are very good at this and that's why we recommend them.)
But there are also 7 additional minerals (called “major minerals” or “macrominerals” by nutritionists) that are needed by the body in such large daily amounts that supplement makers can’t put all you need into a single multivitamin supplement.
That means you must get these minerals mainly from food (or from special supplements) or you won’t get enough… and if you don't get enough, your body will quickly trigger inevitable and irresistible diet-destroying hunger to make you keep eating until you do get enough. (Whenever this happens, think "loads of excess Calories".)
Furthermore, these minerals are needed in such large amounts that you must eat more-or-less "normal" amounts of "ordinary" foods in order to get enough. But "normal" amounts of ordinary foods also have “normal” amounts of infuriating, fattening Calories … and that makes it nearly impossible for you to lose weight.
So to lose weight without hunger, you must eat only low-Calorie foods that also have concentrated amounts of these major minerals… rather than whatever “ordinary foods” are normal for you.
And there are lots of simple, easy-to-find, and delicious foods that do have concentrated amounts of the various major minerals. You just need to know which ones they are, what minerals they have, and how much of them to eat. (There are no mysteries here. Nutrition science finished measuring the major minerals in foods many decades ago.)

Some of these nutrients have such powerful effects that they can alter or even negate the effects of prescription drugs… and your doctor needs to know what you’re doing so he or she can watch for changes and adjust drugs or dosages appropriately.)
What other nutrients do we manage with Simple Effective Weight Loss?
Vitamins and minerals… including the major minerals… are critically important, but even all together they still make up only about one-half of all the “hunger-triggering” nutrients you need to get enough of to lose weight successfully. (You can see why you need a guide for all this.)
Essential Fatty Acids – Another Neglected NutrientThere is one additional class of nutrients that has been almost totally ignored by almost all current popular diet techniques… despite the fact that it runs a “photofinish” with the major minerals as the major cause of diet-destroying hunger (unless it’s managed properly). These nutrients are called the essential fatty acids… and many people have never even heard of them. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are nutrients that are just like vitamins. Your body must get them from food because it can't make them out of anything else—and they are essential to your life and health. The EFAs are essential for nervous system and skin health, and have strong beneficial effects on the HDL/LDL cholesterol balance in blood… among many other things. EFAs are substances that are found in some fats. Most popular diets barely even mention the EFAs, let alone try to make sure you get enough. At best, these diets simply steer you toward "poly-unsaturated" fats… or sometimes "mono- unsaturated" fats… and away from "saturated" fats.
That's not good enough either!It is true that some poly-unsaturated fats have concentrated amounts of the EFAs… and these are the ones you want. But most poly-unsaturated fats have very little, if any, EFA. They do have lots of Calories however. Saturated and mono-unsaturated fats never have any EFAs in them (by definition). So you need high-quality guidance on which poly-unsaturated fats to eat… and what foods have them… and how much of them you need… because too much of them just gives you excess Calories… and too little of them just triggers hunger. You rarely get good advice… or any advice… on EFAs from ordinary popular diets. You do get it… in bucket loads… from Simple Effective Weight Loss.

The “bottom line” for the EFAs (as for each other nutrient) is that you must get enough of each of them from food or your body will quickly come under "nutritional stress" that will always trigger some form of hunger, craving, aches, pains, low energy or other diet-destroying sensation. (Canada has had one for several years.) Weight-loss diets that allow their users to become deficient in essential fatty acids therefore reflect simple nutritional incompetence.)
