BW: What do you think of other diets? AAA: Well, many of the diets developed in about the last 10 years are partially effective. For example, by threshold theory standards, the high-protein diets are often not bad, neither are some of the low-carb diets, and even the low-fat diets could work quite well. The diets that focus on balancing these factors are another step in the right direction. The problem is that these pre-threshold theory diets all tend to work for a period of time and then stop working - or they work for some people but not for others. And despite a fair amount of partisan noise from their proponents, no one's really known why this is so. The fact is that many of these diets are largely correct in what they say. It's just that each of them is missing one or two things that mean it'll stop working under certain circumstances -- circumstances which will always eventually occur for everyone. Understanding the threshold theory allows people who may use these diets to ADD the one or more things that are missing but are still needed to make them work better and keep on working. Naturally, TMD itself is designed to have all of the necessary ingredients from the start. But there are 90+ million overweight people in the U.S. alone and many of them have spent a lot of time becoming very knowledgeable in using these other techniques. So if they want to use TMD to learn how to tweak their favorite technique to make it work better, I think that's great. |
