Below is an excerpt from Part One of by Anderson A. Anonymous, M.D., Ph.D. THE PRINCIPLES OF THE MULTI-DIETThe three basic premises of the Multi-Diet are these: One: The only effective way to lose serious amounts of fat is to maintain a daily Calorie deficit for a sufficient number of days. This means that you eat fewer Calories each day than you actually use that day. Two: There is an internal "blocking factor" which under normal circumstances attempts to prevent you from maintaining this daily deficit for a sufficient length of time to lose any serious amount of fat. Three: This blocking factor can itself be prevented from operating. This is the fundamental difference between The Multi-Diet and all the other approaches. You can understand and consciously manage the things that control this blocking factor, in order to stop it from interfering with your weight loss. Comments on the Premises
A. The idea that you must eat less energy than you actually use in order to lose weight is a mainstream concept not seriously questioned by anyone. B. The existence of a "blocking factor" is the personal experience of virtually everyone who has ever dieted. There is also a large amount of both physiological and psychological research and theory that supports the concept. (This is discussed in Part Two.) C. Researchers have put huge amounts of time and effort into discovering most of the things that control the "blocking factor". Very few people question the basic validity of their discoveries, though specialists still argue over details. Many authors have built whole diet techniques around one or another of these discoveries, but it is the new threshold theory that allows us to pull all of this information together and organize it as a comprehensive and workable weight-loss technique. DiscussionWhenever people try to diet, they almost always run smack into the "blocking factor". This is a frustrating and miserable experience, which can also be so powerful that it prevents even medically necessary weight loss. It therefore often leads both researchers and ordinary people to jump to the conclusion that there must be some unknown "disease process" at work. But jumping to this conclusion is wrong-a disease model is not necessary to explain the problem. I have deferred the theoretical explanation of the alternative to MORE ON... THE THRESHOLD THEORY on page 113 in Part Two. |
